MEETING OF ORTHODOX REPRESENTATIVES TO THE EUROPEAN UNION

A working meeting of Orthodox representatives to the European Union took place in Brussels on December 7, 2002. It was attended by Bishop Emmanuel of Reghion, head of the Patriarchate of Constantinople representation to the European Union, Bishop Hilarion of Podolsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate representation to the European Institutions, and Bishop of Ahaia Athanasios, director of the Greek Orthodox representation bureau to the European Union, Council of Europe and UNESCO.

During the meeting, which was held in friendly climate, they constructively discussed a wide range of issues concerning the Orthodox participation in the European Institutions. They also stressed the need to coordinate efforts for developing a common position on the European Union extension and the role of the Orthodox tradition on the European continent.

During the discussion they made an agreement to hold regular meetings for exchanging information and coordinating actions.
