THE FIRST VISIT OF AN OFFICIAL OF THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH TO PHILIPPINE

On November 23, 2002, His Eminence Kirill, Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, DECR chairman, arrived in Manila on the invitation of Mr. Nebogatov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Philippine. This visit is the first one undertaken by a clergyman of the Russian Orthodox Church to Philippine.

In the airport Metropolitan Kirill was welcomed by Mr. Nebogatov and his wife, counsellor of the embassy Mr. Levin, Protocol Chief of the Philippine Foreign Ministry and staff members of the Russian Embassy. In the hotel Metropolitan Kirill was warmly welcomed by Orthodox believers working in Russian representations in Manila.

On November 24, Metropolitan Kirill celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the residence of the Russian Ambassador. It was a true spiritual consolation for many faithful gathering for the service. The Liturgy was attended not only by Russian countrymen, who are visiting aliens or residents of Manila, but also guests from foreign diplomatic and trade representations accredited in Manila.
