METROPOLITAN KIRILL MEETS THE LEADERS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION
On 17 June 2002 Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, met with the leaders of the European Commission (EC) – the supreme executive body of the European Union. The meeting took place in the framework of the visit of high-ranking representatives of Christian Churches and organizations of Europe to the EC. Conversations were held with the EC Chairman Romano Prodi, the EC members Michael Barnier and Antonio Vitorino, director Ricardo Levi of the group of political advisers of the EC Chairman, and some members of the EC staff.
During the talk with the EC leaders Metropolitan Kirill confirmed the readiness of the Russian Orthodox Church to take part in the wide dialogue the on world-outlook matters with the EC structures conducted for the sake of establishing a multipolar and multilayered world order, which would guarantee stable co-existence of different models of culture and civilization. The DECR MP Chairman expressed his hope that spiritual and world-outlook foundations of the Eastern Christian civilization and its values will be taken into account in the formation of the general European law.
