METROPOLITAN KIRILL VISITS IRELAND
Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, visited the Republic of Ireland from November 29 to December 2, 2001. Metropolitan Kirill is the first archpastor of the Russian Orthodox Church visiting Ireland. He was accompanied by Hegumen Hilarion (Alfeyev), DECR Secretary for Inter-Christian Relations and Rev.Michael Gogolev, a clergyman of the Surozh Diocese.
On November 29 Metropolitan Kirill met with the Archbishop of Dublin the Most Reverend Walton Empey (the Church of Ireland). Metropolitan Kirill thanked the Archbishop for his good attitude to the Russian Orthodox Church and his willingness to pass the Holy Cross Church into use of the parish of the Russian Orthodox Church.
That same day Metropolitan Kirill had a working meeting with Dublin Mayor Mr.M.Milk.
On November 30 Metropolitan Kirill met the Archbishop of Dublin Desmond Cardinal Connel.
That same day Metropolitan Kirill visited the Holy Cross Church, which the Church of Ireland passed into the use of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Kirill visited the Trinity College of the University of Dublin where he met with the Rector and the faculty.
On December 1 Metropolitan Kirill celebrated the Divine Liturgy together with Bishop Basil of Sergievo, a vicar of the Surozh Diocese, in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of the Mother of God in Dublin.
After the Liturgy Mr.V.N.Istratov, charge d’affairs a.i. of the Russian Federation in Ireland gave a luncheon in honour of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church at the Embassy of the Russian Federation.
On December 2 Metropolitan Kirill accompanied by Hegumen Hilarion and Mr.V.N.Istratov visited the cities of Limerick, Cashel and Kilkenny.
