CELEBRATIONS DEVOTED TO THE 950TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KIEV LAVRA OF THE CAVES

As reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (www.orthodox.org.ua), the official delegations of the following Local Orthodox Churches came on August 27 to Kiev: Constantinople (Metropolitan Meliton of Philadelphia and Bishop Emmanuel of Rhigion), Alexandria (Metropolitan Chrysostom of Carthage and Archpriest Basil Varvelis), Antioch (Bishop Niphon of Philippopolis and Protopresbyter Boutros Boutros), Georgia (Bishops Gerasim of Zugdidi and Tsaish and Andrew of Sagarejoi and Gurjaani, and Mr. George Andriadze), Serbia (Bishops Basil of Tuzla and Irinej of Bac), Romania (Archbishop Pimen of Suceava and Radauta and Rev. Ioann Pitura and Theoktist Kaia), Bulgaria (Metropolitan Nafanail of Nvrokop, Archimandrite Barnabas, Hieromonk Seraphim), Cyprus (Bishop Basil of Trimiphuntus), Albania (Metropolitan Ioann of Korcin), Poland (Archbishop Abel of Lublin and Holms and Archpriest George Tofiliuk), Chech Lands and Slovakia (Bishop Ioann of Mihalovci), America (Bishop Seraphim of Ottawa and Canada, Archpriest Denis Pihach, and Deacon Alexis Klimichev).

The delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate included over 20 bishops from Russia led by Metropolitan Sergius of Solnechnogorsk, Chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate. Besides, among those who came to Ukraine were Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Metropolitan Vladimir of Kishinev and All Moldova, and Metropolitan Cornilius of Tallinn and All Estonia. The delegation of the Greek Orthodox Church, who brought the honorable head of St. Andrew the First-Called, came to Kiev earlier, on August 25.

On August 21, the assembly of archpastors and clergy led by His Beatitude Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine, conducted All-Nigh Vigil at the Cathedral of the Dormition at the Kiev Lavra of Caves. On August 28, the Day of the Dormition of the Theotokos, His Beatitude Vladimir, the bishops and clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and ordained members of the Local Churches delegations celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Lavra’s square. There were some nine thousand worshippers. Among those who attended the service were Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Staff Mr. Litvin, and Ukrainian vice-prime minister Mr. Seminozhenko.
