METROPOLITAN KIRILL SIGNS A DOCUMENT TRANSFERRING THE PILGRIMS HOUSES’ FACILITIES TO THE MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE
Amendments to the 1998 Agreement between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Bari City Council were signed on April 5 at the Department for External Church Relations, by Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, DECR chairman, and Mr. Simeone di Cagno Abberscia, Mayor of Bari.
The amendments provide for handing over to the Moscow Patriarchate Representation in Bari the so-called Royal Chambers, spacious first-floor and semi-basement facilities of the Pilgrims’ House.
In his talk with the Italian delegation, Metropolitan Kirill noted the exceptionally positive nature of the development of relations between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Bari City Council. He appraised the document signed as another important testimony to the good will of the city authorities in consolidating the Russian church presence in the city, where the relics of the great man of God and wonder-worker, St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Licea, have rested since 1087. The Mayor of Bari, in his turn, reaffirmed the intention of the city administration to promote pilgrimage from Russia to the healing relics of the saint.
Present at the meeting were members of the Italian delegation, Hegumen Hilarion Alfeyev, DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations, and Rev. Vladimir Kuchumov, rector of the Moscow Patriarchate Church Representation in Bari.
