THE POCHAEV ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MOSCOW
The Icon of Our Lady of Pochaev, one of the most celebrated and cherished images of the Heavenly Queen, was brought on January 31, 2001, to Moscow from the Pochaev monastery of the Dormition at the request of the father superior and the brethren of St. Daniel’s monastery and with the blessing of Bishop Vladimir of Pochaev.
The miracle-working icon was given to a landlady by name of a. Goiskaya by the Greek Metropolitan Neophite in 1559. After the icon helped heal her brother, it was handed over to the Pochaev monastery in 1597.
For four centuries the Heavenly Queen has given her all-powerful help to the Pochaev monastery. An annual feast of the Pochaev Icon has been established to commemorate the miraculous deliverance of the monastery from Turkish troops on July 23 (August 2 according to the new calendar) 1675, when after an ardent prayer of the besieged at the Pochaev icon the Most Holy Virgin herself appeared over the church and put the enemy to flight,
Many healings and miracles have been performed by the Most Holy Theotokos through her miracle-working icon. In the end of 2000, it was taken to the city of Anadyr in Chukotka.
It is for the first time that the Russian capital city meets the Pochaev Icon of the Theotokos. At present the icon is in the Cathedral of the Trinity at St. Daniel’s monastery and will be in the capital city for about a month. It can be venerated from 9.00 till the end of vespers at about 20.00.
