New primate of the Autonomous Orthodox Church in Japan is elected

NEW PRIMATE OF THE AUTONOMOUS ORTHODOX CHURCH IN JAPAN IS ELECTED
On May 6, the Extraordinary Local Council of the Autonomous Church in Japan elected Bishop Daniel (Nushiro) as its Primate.
According to canons, the new primate will take office immediately upon his approval by Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia. Bishop Daniel will be installed Metropolitan of Tokyo and All Japan on 14 May 2000 during the official visit of Patriarch Alexy to Japan, which will take place from May 12 through 19.
